FOREWORD
In his pioneer work Psychopathia Sexualis, the German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing remarked on the subject of incest, “The preservation of the moral purity of family life is a product of civilization; and feelings of intense displeasure arise in an ethically intact man at the thought of lustful feelings towards a member of the same family. Only great sensuality and defective ideas of laws and morals can lead to incest.”
The good doctor would be horrified, then, to meet the family introduced in the present work, JIMMY’S NEW MOM. Indeed, any “ethically intact man” or woman would be not a little shocked to learn of the bizarre erotic entanglements which take place inside this seemingly innocent and happy family.
These erotic entanglements were not consciously planned. The central characters of the novel, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Thomas and their adopted twins, Jimmy and Judy, began their life together normally enough. Perhaps the incestuous course of events may be accounted for by the disorientation of the twin brother and sister following the death of their real parents; or perhaps the cause lies in the growing boredom and dissatisfaction experienced by Grant and Kay Thomas in their twenty-year-old marriage. Whatever the reasons, the new family quickly departs from the sexual norm, and an accidental, yet seemingly inevitable chain of events sweeps them into an incestuous web binding all the members of the family, not to mention an innocent outsider.
Much as we may deplore the deviant character of these relations, there is much value in studying their genesis, for only in this way can we determine exactly what factors are involved when a family is launched into a course of action deplored by religion and the law and despised by society. What causes people to take such risks? Why have normal sexual experiences left them dissatisfied? The answers to these and other questions will, we hope, be illuminated by JIMMY’S NEW MOM. Such questions cannot be solved by ignoring them, nor by the belated “punishment” of the parties involved. The deficiencies of the American penal system have been widely publicized in recent years, and it is hardly necessary to remind the reader that all too often a person guilty of only one “crime” emerges from prison equipped and trained to commit even worse offences. This is especially true in the case of so-called sexual deviants, since the prison experience is only too likely to confirm such people in their previous habits. Thus the answer lies not in punishment after the “crime”, but in preventing the offence in the first place, a task which cannot be undertaken without a thorough study of deviant families. It is with these arguments in mind that the present book is offered.
