Mom, Dad, Sis & Brother
RX-357 MOM, DAD, SIS & BROTHER by Erika NormanFOREWORDThe eminent British psychiatrist Dr. Anthony Storr remarks in his book Sexual Deviation, “To some extent, guilt about sex is inevitable, however liberal and understanding the parents, for sex cannot normally find its full expression within the family circle. The so-called incest taboo precludes the satisfaction of even infantile sexuality, and so sex for the child is bound to remain partially a secret and thus something about which he feels some sense of guilt.” Dr. Storr speaks here of the normal or typical family. The novel MOM, DAD, SIS & BROTHER, however, deals with a very untypical American family, in which the children feel no guilt whatsoever about sex because their parents have not made them aware of even the most elementary and universal sexual taboos. Herb and Betty Smith have gone out of their way to be “liberal and understanding” parents, not wishing their children, Rick and Cindy, ever to feel guilty or inhibited about their natural bodily functions, including sex. As the novel shows, the Smiths’ great error is going too far in this well-meaning direction. They fail to provide their children with any morality at all, and in their uninhibited quest for pleasure, Rick and Cindy trample upon one sexual prohibition after another, prohibitions established by tradition to keep society intact. The result is emotional chaos for the Smith family. Herb and Betty Smith find themselves helpless to prevent this chaos. Indeed, they become drawn into it as incestuous relations gradually build between parents and children. The reasons for this helplessness are long-standing difficulties in the Smiths’ marriage. Once blessed with sexual rapport, Herb and Betty have grown away from each other in the course of a fifteen-year marriage, which leaves husband and wife depressed, confused, and hungry for new partners. In this precarious emotional state, they find it hard to resist the innocent and exciting advances of their attractive son and daughter. If this novel contains a moral, it is that frankness has both its uses and its limitations. Herb and Betty are too frank with their children and not frank enough with each other. As they discover after much anguish and guilt, their family can be saved only by applying intelligent restraint to their children’s behavior and by reserving sex solely for the husband/wife relationship. What once seemed harsh and old-fashioned appears, in the long run, to be best for everyone in the family.
