Little Boys And Laura
RCL-228 LITTLE BOYS AND LAURA by Lydia GrayFOREWORDOne of the more interesting facets of the ongoing sexual revolution today is that people are openly discussing and dealing with and coping with the more natural sexual phenomena that have for so long been considered “unmentionable”. This interesting novel deals with just such a phenomenon — what happens when sexual excitement is no longer present in a marriage? Here we see a middle-aged woman act out a sexual fantasy when, after twenty-one years of marriage she learns that her husband no longer finds her sexually desirable. She finds sexual satisfaction and emotional release in seducing young boys. As the reader progresses in this narrative it becomes increasingly more difficult to separate reality from fantasy. Laura, the protagonist, commits every imaginable sex act with boys between the ages of ten and twelve while her forty-three-year-old husband engages in a lively affair with a seventeen-year-old girl. Are these acts real? Or are they fantasy projection on Laura’s part? The author gives us a small clue in the final line of the novel, but by that point we realize that it isn’t really important. For what we have here is a natural human phenomenon and the various behavioral patterns which could result. The author has used nothing that is not well documented as having taken place on numerous occasions in our society. She is, as it were, giving us a reflection of ourselves in a somewhat cracked muter. In fact, the author seems to be challenging the reader with the question, “Would you react as any of the three major characters here have?” It is in this manner that books of this nature are of real value to society in that they mirror what we might be and caution us about the outcome at the same time. If this novel can help one person recognize and avert his or her folly, it has served more than its more evident, purpose of entertainment.
