FOREWORD
Psychologists have long noted that man is a gregarious animal whose need for affection and approval is as real and basic as his need for food and shelter.
This social need is reflected many times over in our everyday lives. There is the teenaged boy who frequently smokes marijuana, though he dislikes it, because he fears being branded a “straight” by his friends. There is the suburban housewife who turns to an illicit affair because her husband, totally dedicated to his business, cannot or will not give her any affection.
This is the story of a young girl, Nancy Allison, just starting out in college and finding that life on her own is not quite what she had expected it to be. After one unpleasant experience, she comes to think of all men as her enemies, and she tries to sublimate her natural physical drives through her schoolwork and other activities. But the more she tries to deny her body’s normal cravings, the more she finds herself preoccupied with sex. It is a vicious circle from which there appears no escape. Finally, however, Nancy faces facts and accepts her sexuality for what it is.
A story with a timely message for our uptight society.
